Top 10 Health Issues for University Students

It is probably the toughest life transitional phase from high school as a teenager into adolescence as a university student.

According to the 2018 National College Health Assessment, university students’ top 10 health issues are:

Higher education can be very demanding, especially when many students have to work part-time to finance part of the education costs. Besides the above concerns, many other issues can also affect students such as body image, nutrition, alcohol and drug abuse, sexual health, etc.

University students can try to keep themselves physically and mentally more balanced by adopting some of these practical daily routines:

  • Stretch regularly and often
  • Yoga and mindfulness
  • Walk to class and bike around
  • Put a limit on weekly work hours
  • Stick with the right meal portion and vary meal choices
  • Stock up on healthy snacks
  • Drink more water and less alcohol
  • Take vitamins
  • Take daily naps
  • Don’t study and work in bed
  • Keep room dark and quiet prior to bedtime
  • Get tested regularly and always use protection
  • Take vaccinations
  • Learn how to say no
  • Get out of bad relationships and into good, supportive ones
  • Don’t go to class when you are sick
  • Be sure to spend time relaxing with friends
  • Know the signs of depression and seek help when needed
  • Always expect things will change at this stage of life
  • Don’t make “fitting in” your university goal
  • Get involved in campus activities
  • Be sure to keep emergency contacts updated
