In 2003, 35 “pioneering” restaurants got together and began a food festival tradition in Toronto with prix fixe with lunches at $15, $20, $25, while dinners were at $25, $35, $45. It was an effort to push Toronto tourism following a drastic decline in world-wide travel due to the SARS epidemic of 2003. 6 years later, 150 restaurants were part of this bi-yearly festival: Summerlicious and Winterlicious.
A special city department runs the festival using certain standards in food quality, pricing, cleanliness, and good reviews. Any independent restaurants can apply for this program but the city has final decision in choosing participants. Though these menus are offered at a discounted rate, restaurants do enjoy an increase of business by 3-4 times during the festival.
Winterlicious 2019 welcomes over 200 participating restaurants from many GTA neighborhoods, with lunches at $23, $28, $33 and dinners at $33, $43, $53. From Argentinian to Egyptian to Thai to Vegan and everything in between: there is surely a place that will fulfill the most critical taste palette.
This year, there are 12 unique culinary events like Afternoon Tea at the Casa Loma for $40, or Feed Your Fashion Presented by UNIQLO (for $100) at Kasa Moto where guests can feast on the four-course Japanese-fusion meal including wine, view the latest Spring/Summer 2019 collection by UNIQLO, and take home a special gift from the collection. The Spanish Gypsy Tales expedition ($85) at Tapas at Embrujo will be hosted by two chefs who will guide patrons through the stories of Southern Spain, accompanied by an electrifying flamenco performance by renowned dancer Maria Serrano. The menu for the Beer vs Sake – A Pairing Journey of Bites and Libations event at Boku Noodle Bar is inspired by Japanese, Vietnamese and Filipino cuisines.
